William Bartram was a famous botanist, artist, naturalist, and
Author (“Travels”) who explored the area along the St. Johns River in Florida, during the late 1700’s. His marvelous drawings and descriptions of the flora and fauna he saw as well as the Native Americans he encountered and befriended, delighted readers in Europe. “Travels” became recognized as one of the most important scientific books of his time, with extremely accurate illustrations that he sent with utmost care to England from the new world.
Many of the encounters with local traders and with wildlife along the St. Johns have been tied to present day locations in Putnam County, Florida, and nearby Paynes Prairie. With this rich history in our backyard, we have grasped it’s wonder and created trails (hiking, biking, kayak/canoeing) with interactive maps (story maps) which can act as a guide to many of these historic spots.
